Mrs. Borden’s Newsletter
May 2008
Dear Families,
This month we have many exciting events! Please see the important events and dates below!
In phonics we continue to play a game called “Say it, Move it”
I say a word; “hut”, for example. While the children say each sound they move a block into a square (from left to right). /h /u/ /t/
They then spell and write the word by associating each sound with a letter.
We also play “Say it, play it” where the children take turns saying the phonemes and the others have to guess the word.
These games are great to practice at home or in the car!
We have taught all of the long and short vowel sounds and next week we will finish consonant sounds q, v, and y! We will continue to practice them through our decodable and guided reading activities and encoding.
We are also practicing “silent e” words.
We will continue to work on comprehension and retelling skills as well as using detail and elaboration in both reading and writing!
In Math we are finishing up a unit on measurement. The children are having fun experimenting and estimating with length, height, volume, and area as well as sequencing events. Our next topic is “Equal Groups, Sharing, and Fractions. In Science we are planting, observing nature, and studying life cycles.
We’ll see you all at the Writing Celebration and Music Informance!
Sincerely,
Margaret Borden
